Sunrise & Stones

A sunrise walk at Merrivale with archaeoastronomer Carolyn Kennett and Dartmoor expert Paul Rendell

Monday 26/05/25, 04:45 – 07:00, Four Winds car park

Experience the tranquil beauty of Dartmoor at dawn for this gentle stroll to the Merrivale stone rows, one of the moor’s most impressive and atmospheric prehistoric sites. As we celebrate the arrival of the morning sun you will learn all about the ancient complex. The site is over four thousand years old, features two parallel stone rows, a standing stone, and a stone circle, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the open moor. Bring your stories and poems and anything about the stones and dawn you’d like to share.

Carolyn Kennett, an archaeoastronomer with a passion for exploring the connections between ancient peoples, the landscape, and the skies, will lead this special walk. Learn about the possible celestial alignments and the role these monuments may have played in rituals and timekeeping for our Neolithic ancestors, as the first light of the day illuminates this extraordinary site. Paul Rendell – known fondly as ‘Dartmoor Paul’ is a local historian, author, editor of the Dartmoor News and walk leader who has explored the moor for over 50 years. His knowledge of Dartmoor is second to none.
