WILD LANDSCAPES, VAST SKIES & WINDSWEPT TORS – Mark Burley & Andrew Stacey
Friday 23/05/25 – Monday 26/05/25, 10:30 – 17:30
Wild landscapes with vast expanses of sky and colour, co-exist with buzzards, kestrels and the call of nature. All creating wonderful vistas that all of us both young and old can appreciate. Sherewood Gallery celebrates this with a both a painterly and photographic sideways look at lichen, woodland and tors. Old man’s beard, witch-moss and lichen abound with a backdrop of dark, dense woodland and a radial focus on the slopes beyond (through the trees). Starting with Wistman’s Wood, then the Dart Valley and Emsworthy mire.
Dartmoor and its landscape has inspired people’s beliefs and imagination. From the thick mists that suddenly appear and roll across the moor, to the dark, bottomless mires and the craggy granite tors. Each lends an air of mystery and magic, all ripe for associated legends and tales.
Mark Burley’s photographs show the diversity of the moor and the wider landscapes which are highly varied and peculiar to dartmoor. Andrew Stacey’s paintings are vibrant and shamanic, mapping Dartmoor’s wheel of change along with a wild kaleidoscope of colour all emanating from the heather, gorse and huge skies – that are prevalent throughout the moors and tors.
