Walk: Dawn and Stones – a Processional Walk to Drizzlecombe with archaeoastronomer Carolyn Kennett
Monday 4th May, 04:15 – 06:30, Gutter Tor
Join archaeoastronomer Carolyn Kennett for a dawn gathering at Drizzlecombe, one of Dartmoor’s quietly powerful ancient landscapes. In the hush before sunrise, we’ll walk out together across the open moor, following a processional path towards the famous stone rows and standing stones as the first light spills across the sky. This is a low-key, reflective experience. As we move through the early morning, Carolyn will invite you to notice the changing colours of the dawn, the calls of waking birds, and the way the wide moorland gradually reveals itself around us. Arriving among the stones, we’ll pause to watch the sky brighten and the sun rise, taking time for stillness and quiet reflection. Carolyn will share stories of the sky, the stones, and this turning point in the year, opening space for soft conversation and simple presence.
This gathering offers a peaceful way to meet the new season, connecting with the land, the morning light, and each other through a calm, shared experience. You will learn about the possible celestial alignments and the role these monuments may have played in rituals and timekeeping for our Neolithic ancestors, as the first light of the day illuminates this extraordinary site.
Carolyn Kennett is an archaeoastronomer with a passion for exploring the connections between ancient peoples, the landscape, and the skies.
